THE QUALITY AND STANDARDS OF THE CARE Inspector Name: Janice Linsdell CHILDCARE INSPECTION - 05/06/07 The quality and standards of the care are good. The registered person meets the National Standards for under 8's care and childminding. What sort of setting is it?Earlyworld Kids Club, Newton is one of six out of school clubs owned by Earlyworld Limited. It was registered in 2006 and operates from a self-contained unit situated within the grounds of Newton Primary school in Chester. Children have access to their own outside area and the school grounds for outdoor play. Helping children to be healthy.The provision is good. Children's snacks are prepared in a safe and hygienic manner because all staff are trained in basic food hygiene. Children enjoy a selection of healthy snacks, such as fresh fruit, vegetables and sandwiches. Snack time is relaxed and well organised. Children have good opportunities to be active in the fresh air. They use a variety of outdoor equipment to promote their physical skills, such as skipping ropes, balls, scooters and skateboards. Staff make good use of the school grounds to encourage children's fitness; organising group games, such as football or games with the large parachute. Protecting children from harm or neglect and helping them to stay safe.The provision is good. The premises are purpose built, safe and welcoming for children. Children have access to a wide range of resources and play materials, staff ensure all equipment used by the children is safe, clean and well maintained. Children are well supervised by the high ratio of adults on duty, which helps to ensure their safety. Annual risk assessments and regular health and safety checks are carried out so that hazards to children are quickly identified and addressed. Children's welfare is well safeguarded because staff understand their role in keeping them safe from harm. Helping children achieve well and enjoy what they do.The provision is good. Children are happy and comfortable in their surroundings. They build positive relationships with staff and begin to develop friendships in the club. Staff show interest in what the children have to say and they chat openly together, for example, discussing family events or a recent holiday. Children are encouraged to make decisions about how they wish to spend their time. They confidently make choices from the variety of activities on offer and enjoy playing in the water tray, using the snooker table and creating their own pictures using glitter. Children have some good opportunities to play imaginatively. Children enjoy activities, such as bingo, pebble painting, treasure hunts and taking part in football tournaments. They are currently in the process of developing their own newsletter, with support from staff. Children say they like attending club and enjoy taking part in craft activities and playing outside. Helping children make a positive contribution.The provision is satisfactory. Children are beginning to learn about other cultures as they take part in activities, such as 'food from around the world', and there are some good quality photographs displayed showing positive images of diversity. Children's opinions are valued and they are encouraged to write their ideas in the 'wish list book'. Children have been involved in developing the rules of the club, which means they understand how they are expected to behave. They are very polite and show a willingness to be helpful; responding to requests to tidy away toys. Parents express their satisfaction with the care being provided for children. Organisation.The organisation is good. The club is well organised so that children are well cared for in a safe and stimulating environment. Staff are trained to Level 3 standard or above, which exceeds minimum requirements for qualified staff. Ongoing training is encouraged and staff have attended a variety of courses, such as risk assessment, diversity and disability, and a number of courses are planned for the near future. All required documentation to promote children's safety and welfare is readily available, well organised and well maintained.
